Our area of Puglia

Italians know Puglia as the hidden gem of Italy. From the coastal cliffs to the white washed Grecian architecture, Puglia has been a surprising haven for us the past few years. Needless to say, it will mean the world to us to share it with our family and closest friends. We put together some notes about our favorite places nearby. Whether you plan an Italian adventure while you're here or you decide to slowly travel around the area, we wanted you to have an idea of what is waiting for you.

Bari

This is where we live. :) Bari is a beautiful city on the coast with two main sections, the old town and the new town. We live in Bari Vecchia, the old town. This part of the city is historical with white washed buildings and a castle/fort that used to protect the city from water invaders. Now you can walk through the old town and enjoy daily vegetable markets, fresh made panzerotti, and meet the ladies of Bari who make fresh orecchiette pasta right in front of you. The new part of the city is also beautiful with many shops and restaurants and a nice path along the sea from the old town to the beach. Bari has a very nice train station that will link you to other cities such as Polignano a Mare and Monopoli. There is also a shuttle to the right of the train station that will take you to the airport in 15 minutes.

Polignano a Mare

Our first love in Puglia. Polignano a Mare will feel like a secret that you can't believe hasn't yet gotten out. You could spend an entire day walking down the coast and stumbling upon different mind blowing archaeological sights that Italians have turned into cliff diving and swimming areas. There is a charming little old town set atop the cliffs with an amazing view of the water. Did we mention the food is amazing?

Monopoli

Our newest love. Monopoli is another white washed, seaside town near Bari. You could spend all day getting lost in the winding streets enjoying the endless shops and restaurants. It's known for the countless beaches along its coast. Each beach is a little different from a smaller sandy strip to rocky coves and cliffs. There's even a beach club with a pool a bit further down Monopoli. It's a great choice for a relaxing day or for a few nights stay.

Accommodation

There are plenty of BnBs and some hotels in the area. We would suggest staying in Bari either near the old town or near Teatro Margarita so you can walk to transportation, restaurants, and shops easily. You could also stay in Polignano a Mare or Monopoli. All three towns can be reached by train in about 30 min.

Transportation

It's possible to rent a car but not necessary if you prefer public transportation. Bari has a beautiful train station that can take you to other nearby towns. You can purchase your train tickets at the station or through the app, trainline. You will also be able to find taxis at the train station and airport.
